Library Update – October 2020

Welcome to all our new Phoenicia Library patrons. We have had over 100 new community members sign up for library cards in the past few months.

For patrons with school-aged children, we are here for you. As part of the Ulster County Library Association, Phoenicia Library will be offering Tutor.com, a FREE one-on-one academic support via text or video chat each afternoon between 2-9 pm. Keep your eye out for an announcement on our website and social media once it is up and running. Phyllis Rosato, retired Onteora school teacher, continues to be available to students in math. She works with families remotely (on the phone or via Zoom, FaceTime, etc.) You can find her information on our website (http://phoenicialibrary.org/) and our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/phoenicia.library) .

We want to draw patrons’ attention to new findings related to recoverable virus on library materials and explain the reasoning behind our safety procedures. Recent studies (https://www.webjunction.org/content/dam/WebJunction/Documents/webJunction/realm/test4-report.pdf) found that detectable virus can remain for six days on stored library materials, which is longer than studies had shown a few months ago. Nevertheless, like many area libraries, we have decided to keep our quarantine length at three days. We feel this is safe because the study also shows the majority of surface virus is broken down within a day. Also, because of delivery time, books are effectively “out of use” for around six days at a minimum between patrons. As the situation evolves, we will keep you up to date.

Late breaking news: The deadline for the U.S. Census will be October 5th. If you haven’t filled out your response, simply go here (https://2020census.gov/en.html) to do so, it will only take a few minutes!

Finally, we are happy to announce Pine Hill and Phoenicia Library will be able to extend our summer grocery program for families through the end of the year. If you have children 18 and under, and would like weekly groceries, just hit “reply” – we currently have a few more spots.

Please take care and let us know if there is anything we can help you with this fall.
