Dear Friends,

On November 7th, voters in the Town of Shandaken will be asked to vote on Proposition #5 that would increase funds for the Morton Memorial Pine Hill and Phoenicia Library services to Shandaken residents. The average increase per household is $4.86 a year, the cost of a cup of coffee and a donut.

This addition to our budgets is a routine adjustment to meet rising expenses since our last budget vote 2 years ago, including higher book and utilities costs, required building maintenance, and technology upgrades.

Pine Hill and Phoenicia Libraries today…

  • In 2022, our community checked out 28,502 books/DVDs/CDs (including both physical and online collections) – that’s an average of 10 books per person checked out in Shandaken.
  • The number of registered patrons at Pine Hill and Phoenicia Libraries increased another 45% in the past two years, to 3,338 patrons, making the libraries the most used public service in Shandaken other than roads.
  •  In 2022, together we offered a total of 279 programs which totaled 6,406 attendees.  In addition, we had 636 one-on-one support programs for things such as Medicare, legal information and math, reading, and ESL tutoring.

The Boards of Pine Hill and Phoenicia Library urge voters in Shandaken to vote “Yes” on the Library Budget on November 7th. The proposition is on the back of the ballot, and is the 5th and last proposition.  Please remember to turn the ballot over.

For more information, please contact either Phoenicia Board President Bernard Handzel at 845- 688-2893 or Pine Hill Board President Katia Blitsman at 516-974-9264.   For questions about library operations, please contact Phoenicia director Elizabeth Potter at director@phoenicialibrary.org and Pine Hill director Gisi Vella at pihlibrary@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,
The Board of Pine Hill Library: Katia Blitsman Board President, Jim Nevin Treasurer, Ashleigh Lovelace Secretary, Don Myers, Patricia Wadsley, Michele Garner Brown, And the Board of Phoenicia Library: Bernard Handzel, President,  Bethia Waterman, Vice President, Becca Frank, Treasurer, Holly George-Warren, Recording Secretary, Sandy Hyun, Corresponding Secretary.
